Joe Frazier To Sue Philly Police
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Former heavyweight boxing champ Joe Frazier says police used excessive force when they arrested him on drunken driving charges last month.
Frazier said Monday he has filed court papers indicating he will sue the city over the April 7 incident.
``I thought that they handled me rough. I’m a very good citizen of the United States and Philadelphia, and I didn’t see a reason for police handling me that way,″ Frazier said.
Frazier, 54, was returning from an appearance at a police benefit function in Hudson County, N.J., when he was pulled over.
He said a police officer yanked his arms behind his back and shoved him into the back of a police cruiser, where he was forced to sit in a painful position for about 40 minutes. He contends he tore shoulder ligaments and needs surgery.
A judge found Frazier innocent of drunken driving during a bench trial on Sept. 24.
Kevin Feeley, a spokesman for Mayor Edward Rendell’s office, said he had not seen the lawsuit and could not comment.
