Nearly A Thousand of Picketers Gather At Warehouse Site
BRIGHTON, Mich. (AP) _ Nearly 1,000 pickets protesting use of non-union labor gathered today at a food warehouse under construction, prompting State Police to send about 200 troopers to the site, officials said.
State Police Sgt. Harold Barden said members of Iron Workers Local 25 of Detroit began gathering at the Gordon Food Service warehouse site in Green Oak Township about 5 a.m. and he said there were nearly 1,000 by mid-morning.
″There’s been no violence, no arrests, just a large gathering out there,″ Barden said.
″Ironworkers are protesting the use of non-union workers to part of the construction,″ said Karen Adams, dispatch clerk for Green Oak Township Police.
All business agents of the union local were at the site and no one was available to comment, said secretary Sharon Smith.
The Dan Vos Construction Co. of Grand Rapids is building the warehouse, Barden said.
No one from the company was available to comment, said Kathy Wnuk, a secretary in the company’s Grand Rapids office.
Barden said nearly 60 union workers gathered without incident at the site about two weeks ago.
