REHOBOTH, Mass. (AP) — State Police say two people pursued by East Providence, Rhode Island, officers abandoned their car when they hit a traffic jam in Massachusetts, then got stuck in the snow.

East Providence police had stopped the gold Mercedes on Interstate 195 East at about 4 p.m. Wednesday but the car took off. Police broke off the pursuit at the Massachusetts state line.

Witnesses told Massachusetts State Police the Mercedes backed up on the highway trying to get out of the stalled traffic, then got stuck in snow trying to drive across the median.

Police were still looking for the suspects Wednesday evening.

The backup was caused by two separate crashes that weren't related to the chase.
