Fire destroys part of brand new boardwalk

March 6, 2018

VENICE, Fla. (AP) — About a quarter of a boardwalk that a Florida city recently spent $349,000 renovating has been destroyed by a fire.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports that the blaze occurred early Sunday morning at the beachfront Service Club Park in Venice.

Venice Fire Marshal Jack Stevenson says someone had set an illegal warming fire after temperatures dropped Saturday night. Wind caused the blaze to spread, destroying about 70 feet of the boardwalk’s approximate 370 feet. Two picnic shelters also burned.

Assistant City Engineer James Clinch says work on the project started in November, and its final inspection had been scheduled for Monday.

It wasn’t clear if anyone has been charged with starting the fire.
