Solar panel firm expands in Oregon, adds 200 jobs

October 30, 2014

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) — The American arm of a German maker of solar panels says it will add 200 jobs in the Portland suburb Hillsboro, reversing several years of cutbacks

SolarWorld Industries America Inc. said Thursday it plans to invest $10 million and expand production capacity in early 2015.

The Oregonian reports (http://bit.ly/10COrUl) that SolarWorld AG, headquartered in Bonn, considers the United States its strongest market.

The Washington County factory was built in 2008 with the help of millions of dollars in public backing. Two years later, SolarWorld’s U.S. workforce peaked. It’s been reduced steadily since then.

SolarWorld executives argued that government-backed Chinese companies were flooding the U.S. market with below-cost panels.

U.S. trade officials eventually agreed and imposed a series of penalties on imports from China and Taiwan, most recently in July.
