Tito’s widow hospitalized in Serbia

August 23, 2013

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Doctors say the widow of former Yugoslav communist dictator Josip Broz Tito has been hospitalized.

Jovanka Broz, 88, was rushed to Belgrade’s emergency hospital Friday in critical condition, according to Zlatibor Loncar, director of the hospital.

Tito ruled the former Yugoslavia with a heavy hand from World War II until his death in 1980. Broz fell out of favor with his successors and was forced out of their luxurious Belgrade residence. Reports at the time claimed she had ambitions to take over the country.

His successors put Broz under virtual house arrest. Later, as Tito’s personality cult crumbled and his once-glorified role in the country’s history came under scrutiny, Broz still mostly remained in isolation. She didn’t even hold valid Serbian identity documents until 2009.
