Pirates minor league report: Aug. 9, 2018

INDIANAPOLIS (Triple-A, 65-51) won 3-1 over Lehigh Valley (Phillies). The Indians won the pitching duel, as they outhit Lehigh Valley just 7-5. The Indians were able to strand bases loaded in the ninth to hold on for the win. SS Kevin newman (.305) continued to swing a hot bat in the leadoff spot, going 2 for 4 with a double and a single, aslo scoring two of the three runs. C Jacob Stallings (.294) added a couple of hits, going 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Starting RHP Mitch Keller (1-2, 6.67 ERA) got the win, pitching six innings, giving up just one earned run and striking out six, earning him his first Triple-A win. RHP Alex McRae (3-8, 4.73 ERA) got his first save, going 0.2 innings, striking out two.

Next: Friday vs. Pawtucket (Red Sox), 7:15 p.m.

ALTOONA (Double-A, 61-51) won 9-7 over Trenton (Yankees). The Curve did most of their damage early, breaking the game open with a three run fourth inning and added on with four more in the fifth. The Curve were able to hold off Trenton late, giving up five in the ninth and stranding second and third to end the game. SS Cole Tucker (.252) and CF Bryan Reynolds (.283) each had three singles, Tucker going 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Reynolds going 3 for 6. LF Logan Hill (.217) went 2 for 5 with a two-run homer and a double, scoring two runs and finished with four RBIs. 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes (.287) had a two-run double with his only hit of the game, going 1 for 5. Starting RHP Eduardo Vera (6-3, 4.48 ERA) pitched six innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out five in the win.

Next: Friday vs. Erie (Tigers), 7 p.m.

BRADENTON (High-A, 50-59) lost 5-3 to Tampa (Yankees). The Marauders struggled early, giving up three in the first and two in the second, and were unable to complete the comeback, scoring a run in the ninth and bringing the tying run to the plate. 2B Mitchell Tolman (.254) went 2 for 4 with a solo home run and a single, finishing with two RBIs. CF Casey Hughston (.189) and DH Raul Siri (.167) each went 1 for 3 with a double, Hughston scoring a run and Siri driving him in. Starting RHP Evan Piechota (0-3, 5.35 ERA) took the loss, pitching six innings, giving up five earned runs and striking out six.

Next: Friday vs. Tampa, 6:30 p.m.

WEST VIRGINIA (Low-A, 57-53) won 5-3 over Greensboro (Marlins) in the first game of the doubleheader. Despite giving up three runs, the Power limited Greensboro to just one hit in the game. The Power went down 2-0 early, in the bottom of the first inning, but followed it up with a one run second and went off in the third for four runs. DH Raul Hernandez (.326) went 2 for 2 with a double and a walk and had an RBI. C Deon Stafford (.265) added a couple of hits, going 2 for 3 with two singles and an RBI. LHP Elvis Escobar (1-1, 3.00 ERA) got the win in relief, throwing two hitless innings with three strikeouts. And RHP Beau Sulser (5-7, 2.61 ERA) pitched the ninth, putting them down in order, striking out two of the three, earning him his fifth save of the season.

LF Fabricio Macias went 2 for 3 with three runs and a double in Game 2, a completion of a postponed game from Aug. 8. The Power won 9-7. Drew Fischer went 1 2/3 innings for the win, allowing three hits and two earned runs.

Next: Friday at Rome (Braves), 7 p.m.

WEST VIRGINIA (Short Season-A, 18-34) lost to State College (Cardinals), 8-7. CF Travis Swaggerty went 1 for 4, and DH Jhoan Herrera went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and a home run. Ryan Valdes took the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) and four hits over 1 1/3 innings.

Next: Friday at State College, 7:05 p.m.

Independent

WASHINGTON (Frontier League, 42-32) lost 6-1 to Joliet. LF Roman Collins went 2 for 4, and 1B Conner Simonetti was 1 for 3 with a run scored. Starter Levi MaVorhis lasted just three innings, giving up five hits and five earned runs to take the loss.

Next: Friday vs. Windy City, 7:05 p.m.
