Boca wins 2-0 to inch up in Argentine standings
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Juan Manuel Martinez scored twice in the first half to give Boca Juniors a 2-0 victory over Defensa y Justicia on Sunday and move the Buenos Aires side into a share of fourth spot in the Argentine first division.
Martinez scored off a low drive from the right wing in the 9th minute, and then took advantage of a goalkeeping error by Fernando Pellegrino in the 41st to notch his second.
The victory improved Boca to 23 points from 13 matches, level with Racing Club.
River Plate beat Atletico Rafaela 2-1 to extend its lead atop the standings to 31 points after 13 matches, four ahead of second-place Lanus and five ahead of Independiente.
In Sunday’s other results, Lanus defeated San Lorenzo 1-0 to move just one point behind River Plate, while Estudiantes defeated Quilmes 1-0.
In other weekend results it was: Belgrano 1, Rosario Central 0; Independiente 3, Tigre 1; Velez Sarsfield 1, Banfield 0; Newell’s 2, Godoy Cruz 2; Olimpo 1, Racing Club 1.
