Small Plane Crashes in Florida

August 14, 1999

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. (AP) _ A single-engine plane crashed into a home just after takeoff on Friday, killing both people aboard and burning down the house.

All six people in the house were able to escape before the explosion and fire.

The Piper PA28-140 registered in Broward County to a law firm crashed about a mile from the airport. The plane did not catch fire immediately, so the people inside were able to escape before it destroyed the house and the car parked out front.

``I’ve never seen anything go up like this,″ said George Finger, a neighbor who saw the plane crash into the home’s roof.

Authorities said they were not sure who was aboard the plane, which was en route to Spanish Cay, Bahamas.

``The airplane burned so bad we cannot read the number on the airplane,″ said Jorge Prellezo, regional director of the National Transportation Safety Board in Miami.

The NTSB and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
