Police shooting probe reassigned to another county

December 23, 2018

ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) — Prosecutors in another county will be investigating an early morning police shooting in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

The Essex County prosecutor’s office says officers responding to a domestic violence report were approached by a man they say threatened to harm them. Prosecutors say the officers fired, hitting the man once, and he was taken to University Hospital in Newark for treatment of injuries said not to be life-threatening.

Thirty-seven-year-old Michael Bates of Orange is charged with terroristic threats and creating a false public alarm; a listed number for him couldn’t be found Sunday and it’s unclear whether he has an attorney.

Essex County prosecutors say they will handle the investigation rather than prosecutors in Union County because one of the responding officers “has a professional relationship” with prosecutors in that county.
