10th Migrant Dies From Ariz. Crash
YUMA, Ariz. (AP) _ A 17-year-old boy has died of injuries suffered when a vehicle packed with illegal immigrants overturned while fleeing the Border Patrol, bringing the accident’s death toll to 10, a Mexican Consulate official said.
The boy died Friday at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, where four other injured migrants were in stable condition, said Jorge Solchaga, head of the protection department of the Mexican Consulate in Phoenix. A baby girl delivered prematurely after the accident to an injured woman also was in stable condition.
The SUV went out of control Monday about 30 miles north of Yuma and rolled when the driver tried to avoid a spike strip Border Patrol agents had placed in its path.
The vehicle was packed with 20 migrants and the driver, who is being held on a federal charge of felony transportation of illegal aliens. Federal officials said additional charges are possible against 20-year-old Adan Pineda Doval. He was arrested after a similar chase last year and was allowed to plead guilty to a misdemeanor.
