STOWE, Vt. — The gray trunks of red spruce trees killed by acid rain once heavily scarred the mountain forests of the Northeast. Now those forests are mostly green, with the crowns of red spruce peeking out of the canopy and saplings thriving below. A main reason, scientists say, is a government-enforced reduction in the kind of air pollution that triggers acid rain. By Lisa Rathke.

INMATE DEATH-ARREST, from MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. — A West Virginia prison inmate charged with first-degree murder in the 2016 death of his cellmate has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental illness.

HOMELESS VETERANS, from LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The federal government has awarded grants totaling more than $47 million to help homeless veterans find jobs.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE-CAMPUS SUPPORT, from CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia health officials have awarded nearly $100,000 in funding for college campus support services for adults who are recovering from substance abuse.
