‘Holiday Extravaganza’: Season sampler by NHSO Pops
The New Haven Symphony Orchestra’s “Holiday Extravaganza” pops concerts typically sell out and if you’ve been to one, you know why. They offer fun, good music and an upbeat season sampler.
This year’s pair of concerts — in Hamden and Shelton, as usual — are another tough ticket, especially during the NHSO’s 125th anniversary with affable pops conductor Chelsea Tipton at the baton. At this writing, there were still seats available in Shelton.
Expect to hear Leroy Anderson’s great “Sleigh Ride,” along with “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Hanukkah Festival Overture” and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” The Elm City Girls Choir will add their vocals on the Hamden Middle School and Shelton High School stages.
In an NHSO release, Tipton said, “It’s beautiful to watch all the smiling faces surrounding the room singing along to seasonal classics. It’s truly a chance for families and friends to make memories together...”
Tipton, by the way, also conducts the Symphony of Southeast Texas and led the tribute to the late President George H. W. Bush with Bush’s hometown orchestra, the Houston Symphony, on Dec. 3.
