Mayor: Warming shelters not priority for Rutland

June 5, 2018

RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) — The mayor of a Vermont city says the creation of a warming shelter for the homeless is not a priority for the community, despite state funding being available.

Rutland Mayor David Allaire says the community would prefer to see the completion of a family shelter in the Howe Center. The Rutland Herald reports that project had been underway since shortly after Allaire was elected.

Allaire says local organizations didn’t answer a request for proposals for the warming shelter, and that ultimately he was open to considering the creation of a combination shelter.

Due to specific designation of the funds for “seasonal warming shelter” use, the $300,000 grant cannot be utilized for anything else.
