Adults charged in beating, scalding of boy plead not guilty
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Five out of six adults charged with severely beating a 3-year-old boy in New Jersey have pleaded not guilty.
The five, including the boy’s mother, entered their pleas Tuesday to charges of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child. The sixth person had her court appearance postponed.
The Essex County prosecutor’s office says the adults beat the child with their fists and a belt in the home they all shared in Newark. Prosecutors say the boy also had scalding water poured on him as a punishment.
Police say a nurse from the boy’s pre-school noticed his injuries and reported them to authorities.
The boy and five other children who were in the home have been placed with child protective services.
