WBS PENGUINS SCOUTING REPORTS Tonight’s opponent: Springfield Thunderbirds When: 7:05 p.m. Where: MassMutual Center Season series: Penguins won the first two matchups between the teams, including a 5-1 decision last week. About the Thunderbirds: Through Wednesday, Springfield was third in the Atlantic Division at 9-4-0-2. It rebounded from the aforementioned loss to the Penguins with a nine-goal performance against Rochester. Dryden Hunt had a hat trick in that game, but was recalled by the Florida Panthers this week. The team added Ryan Horvat on a professional tryout agreement Wednesday; the forward was with the Penguins prior to his release this week. Captain Paul Thompson is having an all-star caliber season with 10 goals and 16 points. Springifeld also owns the second-best power play in the Eastern Conference, Saturday’s opponent: Hershey Bears When: 7:05 p.m. Where: Mohegan Sun Arena Season series: Penguins are 1-1-0-1 against Hershey. About the Bears: Hershey has rebounded from its slow start and sits sixth in the Atlantic at 8-9-0-1. The team had a couple roster moves this week, as goaltender Ilya Samsonov was reassigned to the team Monday. However, defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler was recalled to Washington. Riley Barber, Mike Sgarbossa and Liam O’Brien have established themselves as the team’s best offensive players, combining for 22 of the team’s 45 goals. Hershey is solid on the penalty kill, but is prone to take a lot of minor penalties — the Penguins should get their share of chances. Sunday’s opponent: Providence Bruins When: 3:05 p.m. Where: Mohegan Sun Arena Season series: Providence won the first two meetings, once each in regulation and overtime. About the Bruins: Providence is still last in the Atlantic, but is on the upswing at 6-8-2-0. Ryan Donato is still riding the wave of his two-goal game against the Penguins on Nov. 11; he has five points in his last four games. The team will look a little different than it did in that game, though, as Colby Cave was recalled by Boston in the wake of Patrice Bergeron’s shoulder injury. Defensemen Jakub Zboril, Connor Clifton and Jeremy Lauzon are all with the parent club as well. The team has continued to struggle in close games, dropping a 5-4 contest to Lehigh Valley last Friday. Penguins notes ■On Wednesday, head coach Clark Donatelli said forward Sam Miletic will play tonight barring an unforeseen setback. Miletic has been out since late October with an upper-body injury. He’s been skating at practice with Sam lafferty and Anthony Angello. ■Entering the week, Angello was tied for the league scoring lead among rookies with seven goals. — TYLER PICCOTTI
