IRVING, Texas (AP) _ Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Chan Gailey is the new head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys named Gailey as Barry Switzer's replacement at an afternoon news conference. Switzer resigned last month.

Gailey becomes the team's fourth head coach. Predecessors Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson and Switzer each won at least one Super Bowl. Gailey has been an assistant coach on four Super Bowl-losing teams with Denver and Pittsburgh.

Gailey had been the Steelers' offensive coordinator the last two seasons. Pittsburgh led the NFL in rushing and time of possession under his leadership last year.

Gailey had three interviews with Dallas owner Jerry Jones this week. Jones had also interviewed former San Francisco 49ers coach George Seifert, former UCLA coach Terry Donahue, and Green Bay Packers' offensive coordinator Sherm Lewis.
