MIAMI (AP) _ Gene Derkack scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Florida International snapped a four-game losing streak with a 91-63 win over Virginia Military Institute Monday.

The Golden Panthers (2-8) scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed. VMI (4-5) cut the lead to one, at 20-19 on a layup by Brent Conley, but never got that close again. Florida International took a 39-30 lead at the half.

Florida International opened the second half on a 14-0 run for a 53-30 advantage with 16:16. The Golden Panthers built a 30 point lead at 91-61 with 24 seconds remaining.

Conley led VMI with 27 points and hit 5-of-6 from the freethrow line. He has scored in double figures in 28 of VMI’s last 29 games. No other VMI players scored in double figures. VMI shot only 38.3 (23-of-59) from the field.

Dedric Taylor had 15 points for Florida International and Sam Watts came off the bench for 14. Anthony Harris scored 11 points. The Golden Panthers shot 50.8 (30-of-59) from the field.
