What it will take to end government shutdown

January 9, 2019

The last time this many Americans were forced to work without pay was before Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863. Similarly, we just broke the record of Americans furloughed without severance pay that was set in the Great Recession of 2008.

President Trump has expressed empathy for and advice for those working class people whose paychecks he has stopped. After all, who has more experience in running out of cash and not paying his bills? Ask any of Trump’s South Jersey vendors and suppliers who invoiced Trump casinos for payment, to be stiffed by Trump personally or Trump’s bankruptcy lawyers.

How long will this partial government shutdown last? It will not end when the President admits that he started a stupid fight that he can’t (and shouldn’t) win. That level of honest reality acceptance is simply not allowed by the Trump DNA.

The government shutdown will end when the Senate Republicans accept that their Constitutional Article 1 responsibilities make them equal to, not subservient to, the Chief Executive.
