Legendary UConn coach will be guest speaker at North Augusta girls’ hoops celebration
Geno Auriemma, the legendary women’s basketball coach at the University of Connecticut, will be the guest speaker at the City of North Augusta Celebration Banquet honoring the North Augusta High School girls basketball team, which won its third consecutive state championship last month.
Auriemma has coached UConn to 11 national titles and 19 Final Four appearances since becoming the Huskies coach in 1985. In his three times as the U.S. Olympic Team women’s coach, he has won gold each time.
“Well you have a high school girls basketball program that has won three straight state championships. That tells you they’re the best, what what do you do for the best? You go out and get the best…,” said Rick Meyer, director of Parks, Recreation and Tourism for North Augusta.
“We want them to know how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication and what it took to win a state championship, much less three in a row,” Meyer said.
The banquet will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14th at the Palmetto Terrace ballroom on the fourth floor of the municipal building. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at the Riverview Park Activities Center, the North Augusta Community Center or the North Augusta Municipal Center in the finance department.
