Motorcyclist in critical condition after accident
The Platte County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a two-vehicle accident that resulted in injuries and one man getting airlifted in a medical helicopter from the scene to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha.
The accident, according to Platte County Sheriff Ed Wemhoff, occurred about 10 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Highway 91 and 490th Street, close to Humphrey. The investigation indicated a 2006 Chrysler Town and County van, driven by 19-year-old Madison resident Daisy Gonzalez, had been traveling eastbound on 490th Street prior to the accident. Gonzalez stopped at the stop sign before proceeding eastbound onto Highway 91, the sheriff noted.
A 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle, driven by 22-year-old Columbus resident Joshua Gasper, was traveling westbound on Highway 91 as Gonzalez’s van entered the highway. The investigation, Wemhoff said, indicated that Gasper attempted to stop his motorcycle before losing control and sliding head-on into the van.
Gasper was airlifted to the Omaha area hospital and remained in critical condition as of Friday night, Wemhoff told The Telegram.
Humphrey Rescue transported Gonzalez to the Columbus Community Hospital for precautionary reasons and was later released.
Gonzalez, the sole occupant in the van, was wearing her seat belt and Gasper was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Airbags did deploy in the van.
Alcohol is not considered a factor in the accident, the sheriff said.
Humphrey Fire and Rescue, and Creston Fire and Rescue provided medical assistance and traffic control at the scene. The Humphrey Police Department also assisted.
