Blues sink as pre-season training goes wrong
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — Twenty-eight members of the Blues Super Rugby team had to be rescued from Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf when a pre-season training event went wrong on Friday.
Players were supposed to paddle from Takapuna Beach to Rangitoto Island in traditional Maori canoes known as waka then run to the top of the island’s dormant volcano. But things went awry when several waka were swamped by choppy seas.
The Auckland-based Blues tweeted they “ended up with three submerged waka and an immediate response from nearby craft. Everybody is safe and the team are in high spirits.”
