American, British Troops Conduct Air Force Exercise
LONDON (AP) _ About 350 U.S. aircraft staged mock attacks over northern England and southern Scotland as part of a joint British-American military exercise codenamed Operation Hammer.
Twelve British Tornado F2 and F3 aircraft, equipped with the controversial Foxhunter radar which still has not been judged up to standards, mounted a defense against the mock attack Tuesday.
The exercise, conducted by the U.S. 3rd Air Force based at Mildenhall in Suffolk, included 420 U.S. servicemen and women from the 32nd Army Air Defense Command based at Darmstadt, West Germany, said Mildenhall spokesman Lt. Col. Bob Brus.
He said such exercises are held twice a year.
