BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) _ The Philadelphia Eagles Tuesday signed veteran free agent defensive linemen Jimmie Jones to a one-year contract.
Jones, who spent four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and three years with St. Louis, started 14 games last season for the Rams, before a rotator cuff injury sidelined him for the final two games. He recorded 5 1/2 sacks and 61 tackles, eight behind the line of scrimmage.
He has 306 tackles and 29 1/2 sacks in his career.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) _ The Carolina Panthers, looking to add depth to a corps of outside linebackers depleted by the holdout of Kevin Greene, signed free agent Sedric Clark on Tuesday.
Clark, 6-foot-2 and 245 pounds, was drafted in the seventh round out of Tulsa last year by the Oakland Raiders. He spent time on the Raiders’ practice squad before being picked up by the Baltimore Ravens late in the season.
MILWAUKEE (AP) _ Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Ben McDonald will have surgery on his right shoulder and could be out for the rest of the season.
McDonald, 8-7 with a 4.06 ERA in 21 starts this season, will have the shoulder repaired next Tuesday by Dr. Lewis Yocum, a Los Angeles orthopedist.
McDonald’s arm troubles have canceled any chance the Brewers had of trading him before the July 31 deadline. McDonald went on the disabled list Saturday.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) _ The Minnesota Twins placed pitcher Bob Tewksbury on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday for the second time this season, this time with a sore right shoulder.
Tewksbury, who missed two weeks in May after closing a door of a bus bathroom on his finger, has been bothered by the ailing right shoulder for about a month.
The right-hander is 4-8 with a 3.90 ERA.
To fill Tewksbury’s spot in the rotation, the Twins promoted Shane Bowers, a right-hander who is a combined 13-2 this season at Double-A and Triple-A.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ Adonal Foyle, the first-round draft pick of the Golden State Warriors, will have surgery on his left foot, the team said Tuesday.
Foyle fractured the fifth metatarsal bone while playing in the Jersey Shore League last week. The injury will be evaluated in September to determine if Foyle will be ready for the opening of training camp.
Foyle, a 6-10, 250-pound center out of Colgate, was the eighth selection in the draft last month. He finished his college career as the NCAA leader in blocked shots with 492 in just 87 games.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) _ The Argentine Footballers Union called a strike Tuesday and warned that soccer will not resume until a contractual dispute between a first division team and six players is resolved.
Union spokesman Juan Carlos Sune said the strike would begin Friday and continue indefinitely. It will affect all national league matches, he said. International matches, including World Cup qualifiers, will go ahead as usual.
The strike was called to back six players who say their contracts with first division Deportivo Espanol have expired. They are demanding freedom of contract to move to other clubs. But Deportivo Espanol claims the contracts have not yet expired and are refusing to release the players.
The strike comes with just three games left of the current season.
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) _ If the United States Davis Cup team beats Australia in the semifinals and faces Italy in the final, the matches will be in San Diego.
A U.S.-Italy best-of-5 final would be at the San Diego Sports Arena Nov. 28-30.
First, the Americans have to beat the Aussies at Washington, D.C. Sept. 19-21, and the Italians have to defeat Sweden in the other semifinal at Norrkoping, Sweden.
If the United States wins and Italy loses, the Swedes would be the host team for the final.
