Arizona St. 103, Texas Southern 77
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) _ Ron Riley scored 21 points to lead six Arizona State players in double figures as the Sun Devils beat Texas Southern 103-77 Saturday night in the season-opener for both teams.
Riley scored 10 of his points in the first half as the Sun Devils rallied from an early six-point deficit.
Damiene Humphrey gave Texas Southern a 20-14 lead with 12:20 left in the first half. But Arizona State, led by Quincy Brewer’s six points and Riley’s five, outscored the Tigers 19-0 over the next 5:45 for a 33-20 lead.
Consecutive baskets by Marion Ray helped Texas Southern cut an eight-point Arizona State halftime lead to 51-46 with 16:00 remaining.
But junior guard Lenny Holly scored seven points to spark a 17-2 run and the Sun Devils led 68-48 with 11:41 remaining.
Brewer finished with 18 points for Arizona State while Holly had 17, Rodger Farrington 16, Joe Zaletel 13 and Jeremy Veal 11.
Randy Bolden paced Texas Southern with 34 points and Corey Brotherton added 16.
The Tigers played without senior guard Kevin Granger, their leading scorer last season. He is ineligible for two games after receiving $35 in benefits from an agent.
