Falling Wall Hit by Truck Kills Four in London Street

August 25, 1989

LONDON (AP) _ A truck making a U-turn in a driveway hit a wall that then collapsed, killing four people, including three children from the same family, police said.

Several pedestrians, including Carol Croucher and her four young children, were waiting on the sidewalk for the truck to finish the U-turn in south London when the vehicle struck the 5-foot wall, police said.

About three tons of masonry fell on top of them, police said.

Ms. Croucher, 28, and her 9-year-old daughter survived, but two daughters, aged 4 and 8, and their 8-month-old brother were killed. Another pedestrian, Beverley Walsh, was also killed.

The truck driver was questioned and released without charge, police said.
