It’s his birthday
Pope Francis, the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church, turns 82 today. He was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on Dec. 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
A pope of firsts
Pope Francis is the first Jesuit pope, the first Latin American pope, the first from the Americas and the first non-European pope in more than 1,000 years.
Nearly landed the job before
Then a cardinal, Francis reportedly received the second most votes in the 2005 papal election, which brought Pope Benedict XVI to the papacy.
A modest living arrangement
Shortly after he became pope, the Vatican announced Francis decided to continue staying in a suite in the Vatican hotel instead of moving into the papal apartment.
A distinguished honor
On Dec. 11, 2013, Francis was named Time magazine’s person of the year.
