November 23, 1997

TOKYO (AP) _ A 27-year-old company employee died Sunday after collapsing during a race up the stairs to the top of a 60-story Tokyo building, police said.

Takanori Sato apparently suffered a heart attack on the landing between the 22nd and 23rd floors of the Sunshine Building while competing in the annual race, said a police spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity.

He was pronounced dead after being taken to a nearby hospital.

A total of 558 people took part in the race, which resumed after Sato was carried to the hospital.
