Pakistani Judge Charged In Heroin Smuggling Case
LONDON (AP) _ A Pakistani judge appeared in court on charges he took part in an operation to smuggle nearly 4 1/2 pounds of heroin worth $405,000 into Britain.
William Amarteifio, testifying Tuesday for the Customs and Excise department, said Syrd Mohammed Japhi Iobal, 39, arrived at London’s Heathrow Airport on Sunday and was questioned about two suitcases.
Customs officers discovered heroin in one of the suitcases, Amarteifio said.
Iobal, from Lahore, was ordered held in police custody after Tuesday’s hearing, and is next scheduled to appear in Uxbridge magistrates court next week. He was charged with attempting to import heroin.
Heathrow Airport is in the Uxbridge area on the western edge of London.
Defense lawyer Alan Kurtz said he was making no immediate application for bail.
