Collins, Winters Replace Young, Donaldson

January 30, 1997

HONOLULU (AP) _ Carolina quarterback Kerry Collins will replace San Francisco’s Steve Young, and Green Bay center Frank Winters will fill in for Dallas’ Ray Donaldson on the NFC roster for Sunday’s Pro Bowl.

Young, who had been working out with the all-stars, withdrew Wednesday because of a rib injury. Cracked ribs had sidelined him during the 49ers’ 35-14 playoff loss to Green Bay.

Collins becomes the third replacement quarterback for the league all-star game. Mark Brunell of Jacksonville and Gus Frerotte of Washington earlier were named to replace Denver’s John Elway (shoulder) and Dallas’ Troy Aikman (calf, elbow problems).

Collins, who has played two NFL seasons, threw for 2,454 yards and 14 touchdowns to help the Panthers win the NFC West title.

Donaldson will miss the Pro Bowl because of an elbow injury.

Winters, who has played 10 seasons, will be making his first Pro Bowl appearance.
