Bison to return to Ill. in Lee County preserve

October 3, 2014

FRANKLIN GROVE, Ill. (AP) — Bison are returning to a grassland habitat in northern Illinois.

Sauk Valley Media reports (http://bit.ly/1oGRnEE) the Nachusa (nuh-CHOO’-suh) Grasslands is beginning a project to bring in about 50 bison to roam 1,500 acres on the Lee County preserve, owned and operated by The Nature Conservancy.

The Nature Conservancy says 15-20 bison are arriving over the weekend, with the rest coming in a couple weeks.

They’ll stay in a corral for several weeks to become acclimated to their new home before being released slowly.

The Grasslands began the project years ago and raised $6 million.

The Nature Conservancy has 13 preserves that are home to 5,500 bison. The Grasslands herd will come from preserves in Iowa and Missouri.

Franklin Grove is about 95 miles west of Chicago.
