Paint Pittston Pink Offers Multitude Of Events To Fund Breast Cancer Research

September 19, 2018

Barb Sciandra can paint Pittston pink each year thanks to an innovative treatment that helped her defeat breast cancer. And the money she helps raises through her efforts in and around the Luzerne County city goes directly toward continuing that treatment’s work.

Paint Pittston Pink, a nonprofit that Sciandra founded with Qiana Lehman in 2014, has a full schedule of activities for all ages beginning this weekend.

“It started off as just a couple of things, and now we’re more at about a week and a half’s worth of activities,” Sciandra said. “We try to do a different event for everybody. We have something fun for kids, and something fun for adults.”

Proceeds from the group’s events go toward what Sciandra described as “very specific cancer research” that she believes made the difference in her own breast cancer treatment.

“Not enough money goes to research,” Sciandra said. “That’s really the problem.”

Diagnosed at 34 in 2012, Sciandra survived her bout with breast cancer thanks to an immunotherapy research vaccine she received under Dr. Brian Czerniecki, who was with the University of Pennsylvania at the time and now operates out of Moffitt Cancer Center in Florida. The vaccine takes out a patient’s white blood cells “and kind of reprograms them and revaccinates you to fight off new or lingering cancer,” she said.

“I had a really aggressive form of breast cancer,” Sciandra said. “I feel very lucky. My hope is that treatments like this will be available to everyone.”

Paint Pittston Pink donated $30,000 toward the research its first year and has given a total of $240,000 over four years. This time around, Sciandra hopes to add another $100,000 to that.

The activities kick off Saturday, Sept. 22, with the Rockin’ Roast at F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts, Wilkes-Barre, that will poke fun at Rock 107’s Prospector, Ed Ackerman, Dave Fusco, radio personality Lazy E, Michael Lombardo and John Yudichak.

“We tried to get as diverse a group as possible,” Sciandra said. “Each of the guys that agreed to do this, they all do something different. They’re all different community leaders, and I think each one of them is going to bring something different to the table.”

Other activities planned include yoga classes, a lantern launch, a blood drive, a purse bingo, food- and drink-based fundraisers, celebrity bartending, a Mass and a cornhole tournament.

One of the organization’s biggest events takes place Saturday, Oct. 6, in downtown Pittston, where it will hold the Color Me Pink 5K at 11 a.m., Caped CURE-Sader Family Fun Walk at 11:05 a.m. and Gentlemen’s Dash at noon. Participants in the 5K will find themselves blasted with pink powder, while the Gentleman’s Dash sees men don high heels for a race.

“It’s just funny,” Sciandra said. “Everything that we do, we really try to keep all of our events upbeat and positive, and this is more just a funny thing to do. The guys compete against each other for the couple of months leading up to it to see who can raise the most money. … It’s all done in good fun.”
