Virginia 2, Loyola, Md. 1
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) _ Claudio Reyna scored on a 25-yard shot with 12 minutes remaining Sunday to give defending champion Virginia a 2-1 victory over Loyola of Maryland in the second round of the NCAA soccer tournament.
Virginia (19-3) advanced to a quarterfinal game against Wisconsin, which beat Indiana 1-0.
The game-winning shot was set up when Virginia’s Nate Friends charged toward the goal from the right and forced goalkeeper Zach Thornton to come out. Thornton made a diving save of Friends’ shot, but the Greyhounds couldn’t clear.
Loyola (19-3-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute when Dave Briles scored off a corner kick. The Cavaliers tied the score 16 minutes later when Tain Nix found A.J. Wood with a crossing pass in the penalty area and Wood sent the ball past Thornton.
