Community Christmas Card helps school counselors meet students’ needs in Aiken County

November 18, 2018

School Counselors often are the first to know when when their students have needs that might require a little financial help.

It could be anything from a new pair of shoes, glasses, a book bag or a utility bill, and the Aiken Standard’s second Community Christmas Card can help fill the gap so students can focus on their educations.

For a small donation – as little as $1 – the Aiken Standard will publish the contributor’s name in the Christmas Day issue of the newspaper. Contributions can be made online at tinyurl.com/2018donateaiken.

All donations – 100 percent of the proceeds – will be divided among Aiken County Public Schools to help students when they have those basic needs.

Last year, 102 readers contributed $2,841. The deadline to contribute this year is Dec. 14.

“We are so thankful for the generosity of the community members that donated to the Aiken Standard Community Christmas Card program last year. It was heartwarming for us to see the outpouring of support for our students,” said Sharon Worley, the coordinator of Counseling Services for the school district. “We are grateful to the Aiken Standard for organizing and promoting this program.

“Our school counselors are always looking for opportunities to meet the needs of students so that they can fully focus on their educational pursuits,” Worley said. “The Community Christmas Card program is helping to meet that need and fill in the gaps for our students who need extra assistance.”

Readers can make a contribution for themselves, to honor another person or in memory of a family member or friend. Businesses and organizations can participate, too, making contributions in the names of their employees or members.

To give, please legibly write the names to sign on the Community Christmas Card along with at least $1 per name and mail to the Aiken Standard at 326 Rutland Drive, Aiken, SC 29801 by Dec. 14 to be included in the Christmas Day edition of the newspaper.

To put the donation on your credit or debit card, call the Aiken Standard between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 803-648-2311.

To make a contribution online, visit tinyurl.com/2018donateaiken. Online contributors should include their names and list the names of their honorees in the comments section on the site.

The Aiken Standard’s Community Christmas Card is an inexpensive way for the whole family, area residents and local businesses to give a gift that will keep giving after the holidays.

Christmas is less than six weeks away. Thanks for your help.
