Kiefer, Damm Win, Woodforde Loses

SINGAPORE (AP) _ Germany’s Nicolas Kiefer, who won his first career title last month in Toulouse, won his opening match in the Heineken Open Monday, defeating Scott Draper of Australia 6-4, 6-2.

Draper made too many unforced errors against the eighth-seeded Kiefer.

In another first-round match, sixth-seeded Martin Damm of the Czech Republic defeated Jan Kroslak of Slovakia 6-7, (2-7), 7-6, (7-5), 6-1.

The other seeded player in action, No. 4 Mark Woodforde of Australia, lost to Sweden’s Mikael Tillstrom 6-4, 6-4.

Byron Black, the Zimbabwean with a two-handed forehand and backhand, downed David Wheaton, trying to make a comeback after an injury. Black won in less than an hour, 6-2, 6-4.

Top-seeded Michael Chang plays his first match Tuesday, against Jonathan Star, and No. 2 Marcelo Rios of Chile faces Justin Gimelstob.
