Georgia police chief arrested on DUI, open container charges

January 31, 2019

CLAYTON, Ga. (AP) — Troopers say a Georgia police chief has been arrested on DUI and open container charges.

News outlets report Dillard police Chief Jeremy James Welch was stopped at a safety check road block Friday night in Clayton.

A Georgia Public Safety Department report says the 35-year-old told the trooper he drank a six-pack of beer within the past two hours.

The report says the trooper smelled alcohol inside Welch’s pickup truck and saw a Bud Light can in the center console. It says Welch refused to give a blood sample.

Welch bonded out of Rabun County jail for $1,200. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer who could comment.

Dillard Mayor William Gordon Robinson says Welch has been suspended pending the investigation’s outcome.

Rabun County is northeast near the North Carolina border.
