Chicago man cited for Clare crash with cement truck

August 27, 2018

CLARE – A Chicago man blew a stop sign and caused a cement truck to roll over near the intersection of Malta Road and state Route 64 on Monday, sending both drivers to the hospital, according to DeKalb County Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan.

Jaime Lopez, 19, of the 1900 block of North Pulaski Road, was northbound about 10:45 a.m. on Malta Road in a 2002 Toyota Corolla as a cement mixer was going east on Route 64, Sullivan said. Lopez failed to yield to the cement mixer driver, who had the right of way, Sullivan said.

″[The crash] caused the cement mixer to flip over on its side,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan said both Lopez and Jamie Hardt, 46, of the 400 block of Bethany Road in Sycamore, were taken to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital for minor injuries that didn’t appear to be life-threatening. He said Route 64 had to be closed about two hours after the accident occurred because of cement clean-up.

Sullivan said Lopez was cited failure to yield right of way.
