LEOMINSTER -- One police officer was taken to the hospital for treatment and one police cruiser is temporarily out of commission after the officer struck a telephone pole while traveling on Main Street Friday morning.

According to police Lt. Michael Ciccolini, the crash took place at 11:22 a.m. at the intersection of Main and Tolman Avenue and involved one other vehicle, though the police officer had been the only person brought to the hospital.

“The officer was transported to the emergency room for what appears to be an evaluation to check for injuries,” he said. “It’s pretty standard if you get in an accident of that severity, you’ll be brought to the hospital to check for injuries.”

Ciccolini was unable to comment on how severe the officer might have been hurt, nor was he able to say what the cause of the crash had been.

“It’s still under investigation. The patrol supervisor is on scene investigating and we should be able to release more in the future,” he said.

The utility pole struck by the cruiser was damaged to the extent that it had begun to crack and needed to be fortified by a crew from National Grid.
