SAN ANTONIO (AP) _ Former Texas Tech University chancellor John Montford has been named president of SBC Southwestern Bell, the company announced Thursday.

Montford, who started with SBC Communications Inc. as vice president of external affairs in September, will oversee Southwestern Bell regulatory, legislative and public affairs in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas.

The position also includes similar oversight of SBC’s subsidiary that provides telecom services in Connecticut.

Also a former state legislator, Montford replaced Wayne Alexander, who retired after 31 years with the company. He will be based in San Antonio.

SBC also named Jan Newton as president of Southwestern Bell-Texas.

Newton, a 26-year veteran of the company, has been president of Southwestern Bell-Missouri since 1999.
