Former Assistant Coach And Player Joe Spencer Dead At 73

HOUSTON (AP) _ Funeral services were held Monday for Joe Spencer, an assistant coach for five NFL teams including the New York Jets when they won the Super Bowl. He was 73.

Spencer, who had cancer, died Thursday at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Houston after a long battle with the disease.

A Funeral Mass was held Monday in Oklahoma City, with burial in Bell City, Okla.

Spencer played at Oklahoma A&M. He was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers of the American Football Conference in 1948 and later played in the NFL for Cleveland and Green Bay.

He came to Austin College in Sherman in 1953 as assistant coach and was head coach from 1955 to 1960.

Spencer was an assistant coach for the Houston Oilers from 1961-65, and also coached the Jets, St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints. He also coached in the Canadian Football League.

Spencer is survived by his wife, Betty, a son, a daughter and four grandchildren.
