Bars to close at 1 a.m. 6 nights a week in Oxford
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Closing time is getting a little simpler at bars in the University of Mississippi’s hometown.
The Oxford Eagle reports that aldermen voted Tuesday to make 1 a.m. the time when bars must stop selling alcohol every night of the week except Sunday, when bars must close at 9 p.m.
Previously, bars had to close at midnight on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, while staying open until 1 a.m. the next morning after a Thursday or Friday night. But bars could also stay open until 1 a.m. Sunday if the preceding Saturday saw an Ole Miss football game or was a national holiday.
Oxford Police Chief Joey East says the change will make the law less confusing.
The change takes effect Jan. 18.
