2 Bolivian miners die as police try to open road
LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — Police have clashed with small-scale miners during a protest in Bolivia and at least two demonstrators are dead.
Interior Minister Carlos Romero says 50 people also were injured as police tried to clear a highway blocked by protesters on Monday.
He says police used rubber bullets and tear gas while the protesting miners hurled dynamite, a common practice during Bolivian mining protests.
The independent miners are protesting a new law that would not allow them to associate with private mining companies, though it would give them tax benefits.
