Lawyer : communist-era prison commander will appeal sentence

July 28, 2015

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — The lawyer for a Romanian communist-era prison commander sentenced to 20 years in prison for crimes against humanity in the deaths of 12 inmates says her client will appeal.

The Appeals Court sentenced Alexandru Visinescu Friday for his role in the deaths of political prisoners at the Ramnicu Sarat prison, the first such trial in Romania. He was commander of the lockup that housed the intellectual, political and military prewar elite from 1956 to 1963.

Valentina Bornea told The Associated Press Tuesday, “he will definitely appeal,” adding she had not met Visinescu to discuss the details.

The court ordered Visinescu, 89, to contribute, along with government agencies, to paying 300,000 euros ($330,000) to relatives of victims.

He has 10 days to appeal the sentence.
