Digital Mike: Music comes alive with snow sledding graphics

It’s hard to find someone who hasn’t heard Beethoven’s Fifth. It’s soaring, lively and ripe for graphics to show off the music.

Line Riders

My young friend, Donovan, showed me a fun piece that Doodle Chaos created to show stocking cap-clad sledders zooming along a route that reflects the music’s highs and lows. It’s a treat. Give it a look.

Mountain King Doodle Chaos also has another sledder, this one to the tune of “Hall of the Mountain King” by Edvard Grieg. It was Doodle Chaos’ first line rider track, drawing everything by hand. It took him more than a month to create, he reports. It’s an astounding amount of work and concentration. It’s a treat. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIz3klPET3o# George I’ve seen a series of false statements attributed to George Washington. I’m not a super sleuth, but they often seem a bit too convenient for whatever cause someone is trying to promote. So what do you do? I’m a fan of Snopes.com or Politifact.com, but here’s a good stop as well when the subject is our first president and his words. The Mount Vernon site picks apart words wrongly attributed to Washington. It even ends with a quote that it notes was said by George Washington’s ghost in an episode of “The Simpsons.” Good stuff. www.mountvernon.org/library/digitalhistory/digital-encyclopedia/article/spurious-quotations/ Who’s the most influential? Time magazine’s gearing up to name it’s most influential person of the year. Hero or villain? It can be either or somewhere in between. It’s someone the editors deem has had the greatest influence on events in the past year. You can cast a vote. It won’t be the final arbiter of who’s selected, but it will be factored into deliberations and also give the magazine another thing to write about surrounding its big annual splash. Give it a try. http://mag.time.com/q7QIH8b The Nest The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has its eagle camera back and even better. When I checked earlier this week there wasn’t an eagle settled into the nest, but now is the time to get into the practice of checking it out. The camera is much improved and can bring you closer to the daily life of bald eagles, which I think is pretty darn cool. You might, too. www.dnr.state.mn.us/features/webcams/eaglecam/index.html Peace Plaza On Tuesday, the Rochester Parks and Recreation Department was busy hoisting the Christmas tree in the Peace Plaza. And the good folks at Rochester Downtown Alliance pointed the camera that way. This is a good go-to, live web cam. I’ll probably dig it up in February for Social Ice, but for now, take a look and enjoy the season. www.downtownrochestermn.com/webcam Word of the Year The lists have begun! I’m a big fan of end-of-the-year lists. The Oxford English Dictionary has picked its word of the year. What? Shall I tell. Sure. It’s “toxic.” I like it. Dictionary staff review the usages of words, rate their prevalence in today’s dialogue and then pick the word of the year. The top 10 descriptions of the word “toxic” are: Chemical; Masculinity; Substance; Gas; Environment; Relationship; Culture; Waste; Algae; and Air. Give it a read and see what you think. You might expand your vocabulary. https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/word-of-the-year/word-of-the-year-2018
