Driver convicted in speedy lap around NYC

November 6, 2014

NEW YORK (AP) — A driver who whizzed across 26 miles (42 kilometers) of New York City in 24 minutes has been convicted of reckless endangerment for a stunt trumpeted in dashboard-camera video posted online.

But Adam Tang wasn’t in court to hear Thursday’s verdict. A bench warrant was issued for the Canadian citizen Wednesday after he didn’t show up for his misdemeanor trial.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. says Tang’s “daredevil antics” put lives at risk.

Tang’s lawyer, Gregory Gomez, says he respects the jury’s verdict. He says he’ll focus now on getting Tang to court, arguing for an appropriate sentence and determining whether to appeal.

Tang was arrested in September 2013.

He could face up to a year in jail at sentencing Dec. 8.
