BHS wrestlers go 2-3 at Pius duals

LINCOLN -- The Beatrice wrestling team went 2-3 on Saturday at the Lincoln Pius X Duals Invitational.

Beatrice coach Jordan Johnson called it a day of learning.

“We have such a young team and some realized where they are and I believe this will provide a spark in their training and focus,” Johnson said. “The kids battled hard, but we found some things we need to work on. It’s all about being better every match out and I feel we did that.”

The Orangemen won their first round dual over Lincoln Northeast 45-34.

Picking up wins in that dual include Tanner York by pin at 113, Drew Arnold by pin at 120, Steven Powers by pin at 132, Brock Ostdiek by 14-9 decision at 170 and Jackson Zhang by pin at 220. Picking up forfeit wins was Trevor Reinke at 126, Cole Maschmann at 138 and Brody Nelson at 160.

In their second round dual, Beatrice fell to Waverly 48-33.

Picking up pinfall wins was York, Trevor Reinke, Jacob Karlin at 145 and Brody Nelson. Nolan Bahnson won a 9-3 decisioni at 182 and Drew Arnold won by forfeit.

In third dual, Beatrice defeated Norris 48-28. Picking up pinfall wins was Reinke, Steven Powers, Bryce Karlin at 106 and Tanner York.

Ostdiek won a 4-1 decision and Xavier Smith won a 7-6 decision at 285. Picking up forfeit wins was Arnold, Maschmann and Nelson.

In round four, Beatrice beat Omaah Central 48-34. Pinfall wins included Reinke, Powers and Ostdiek. Arnold won a 10-0 major decision and Nelson and Bryce Karlin got forfeit wins.

In their final match, Beatrice fell to Lincoln Pius X 42-30. Picking up pinfall wins for the Orangemen included Jarrett Koch at 152, York and Arnold. Reinke won a 7-0 decision and Maschmann won a 12-6 decision. Nelson won by forfeit.

Trevor Reinke, a freshman finished 5-0 on the day as did sophomore Drew Arnold.

“Trevor wrestled extremely well,” Johnson said. “Drew also wrestle dwell in all phases.”

Nelson missed last year due to injury, but Johnson was happy with what he saw from the sophomore.

“He wrestled really well today and looked like the wrestler I thought he could be,” Johnson said. “Tanner York looked good going 4-1 and only losing to Emilio Haynes, who is No. 1 in Class A.”

Beatrice will be in action again on Friday at Saturday when they travel to the Boys Town Invite.

“I am excited to see this group grow,” Johnson said. “We go to a very challenging Boys Town tournament next week, so that will be another chance to challenge ourselves.”
