Top-seed Baylor Routs Iowa to Cruise to the Final Four

April 2, 2019

Lauren Cox had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Baylor earned its first Final Four berth since 2012 by beating Iowa 85-53 on Monday night in the Greensboro Regional final.

Didi Richards added 16 points and 10 rebounds, Chloe Jackson had 14 points and the Bears (35-1) -- the top overall seed -- won their 27th straight game by shooting 53%, clamping down on All-American Megan Gustafson and her supporting cast and holding the nation’s best shooting team to a season-worst 32 percent.

Now it’s on to Tampa, Florida, for the school’s fourth Final Four and its first in seven years -- when the Bears won their second national championship.

Patriots sign tackle Lang

The Patriots have signed tackle Cedrick Lang, adding some depth to their offensive line. The 26-year-old spent last season on injured reserve with the Vikings. At 6-foot-7 and 300 pounds, Lang will be competing for a spot in a group that is looking to replace tackle Trent Brown after he signed with the Raiders in free agency. Lang has yet to appear in a regular-season game after he was originally signed by the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2016.

The Kansas City Chiefs have acquired edge rusher Emmanuel Ogbah from Cleveland in a swap for safety Eric Murray, who was originally drafted by current Browns general manager John Dorsey. Ogbah did not report for the start of the Browns’ offseason program Monday, a sign that a trade was in the works. The 25-year-old defensive end was picked 32nd overall in the 2016 draft, and he had 12 1/2 sacks while starting all 40 games he played over the past three seasons.

Stanton on 10-day DL

Giancarlo Stanton joined the New York Yankees’ lengthy injured list after straining his left biceps, an injury that could cause him to miss much of April. Stanton got hurt fouling off a 3-1 fastball from Baltimore’s Dylan Bundy in the third inning of Sunday’s 7-5 loss. Stanton grimaced and stepped out of the batter’s box but remained in the game and played all nine innings.

Allegation against Porzingis

A New York City police official has confirmed that there is an investigation into a rape allegation against NBA star Kristaps Porzingis. NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said that the department has an ongoing probe. He declined to give further details. An attorney for Porzingis had acknowledged last week that a woman had accused the Dallas Mavericks forward of raping her in his Manhattan apartment last year while he was playing for the Knicks. But the lawyer, Roland Riopelle, said the allegation was false and was part of an extortion attempt. Riopelle said Porzingis reported the woman to the FBI in December.

Kentucky has agreed to a long-term contract with coach John Calipari that will allow him to finish his career with the Wildcats. Calipari’s current deal was amended in March 2017 to run through the 2023-24 season, with a base annual salary of $8 million plus incentives. Men’s basketball spokesman Eric Lindsey confirmed via text to The Associated Press that the school reached a new deal with the Hall of Fame coach but did not provide details.
