SEOUL, South Korea (AP) _ Firecrackers soared into the sky in southern Seoul Wednesday as South Korea’s largest telephone compamy dedicated a massive World Cup mosaic image on a downtown high-rise building to celebrate the upcoming global soccer tournament.
The building wrap shrouded the 54-story glass-fronted Trade Tower and featured a young soccer fan holding the golden World Cup trophy. The image is 427 feet high and 171 feet wide.
``The building wrap carries a message of hope for a successful staging of the World Cup,″ said Lee Jang-se, a spokesman for Korea Telecom Co., the country’s largest telephone operator and official partner of the World Cup.
South Korea will co-host the May 31-June 30 tournament with Japan.
Korea Telecom claimed that its ``building wrap″ is the biggest ever.
The second biggest, it said, was a 323 feet-tall by 14 feet-wide building wrap in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, created by U.S. sports gear giant Nike during the Euro 2000 soccer tournament.
