Charges tossed against man accused of punching police horse
GEORGETOWN, Del. (AP) — A judge has dismissed charges against a man accused of punching a police horse in Delaware.
The charges against 34-year-old Gavin Coco were dismissed after the release of surveillance video that appeared to contradict accounts by local and state police.
Coco was charged with offensive touching of a law enforcement officer after the Dewey Beach incident, in which a police horse stepped on his foot as a crowd gathered around police arresting a woman.
Shortly before a scheduled August trial, prosecutors changed the charge to offensive touching of the horse, a charge that Coco’s attorney said was not supported by law. Prosecutors later tried unsuccessfully to amend the charge again to harassment of a law enforcement animal.
A judge dismissed the case with prejudice, saying Coco was illegally charged.
