Hungarian TV Crew Banned From Traveling Through Romania

April 6, 1989

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) _ A Hungarian television crew was barred from traveling through Romania to the Soviet Union, the state news agency MTI reported.

Relations are strained between the Warsaw Pact neighbors over Romania’s alleged discrimination against its 1.7 million ethnic Hungarians.

MTI said Wednesday that the four-man crew from state television had planned to do a report in Soviet Moldavia, which borders Romania.

Alajos Chrudinak, leader of the crew, reportedly said that he and the others waited for more than an hour Tuesday at the Romanian border station of Bors before they were told they could not enter the country.

MTI reported that border station commander Maj. Gavril Ardelanu said all staff members of Hungarian television’s foreign affairs department were not welcome because of TV programs criticizing Romanian policy.
